The act of modelling is a noble and creative pursuit. Model Republic supports the advancement of creativity and excellence in this area.
HOWEVER, there are those out there that would take advantage of people's trust to do them harm. Models are often the target of this ill intent and are ever vigilant of being cheated, scammed, or even assaulted. Attempts have been made to generate 'Black Lists' of known scam-artists and/or those of nefarious reputation. This a step in the right direction, however these lists can easily be abused and are hard to maintain. Circulating Black Lists can be problematic due to legal considerations.
We at Model Republic want to offer our support in building a community in which models (and others) can explore their creativity in a safe and secure environment. To this end, I have started building a group called SAFE LIST. A group for dependable, reliable and professional people. We've created a temporary group to gauge support for this. The goal is to generate a list of known, reliable and trustworthy professionals that can be used as a starting point towards screening out the bad apples. With a few champions on board we can work towards developing a better system and at the same time educate people about the need for vigilance.
If you are interested in helping clean up our community, please visit the "SAFE LIST" group for more information about how to be included in this initiative.

However, I'd like to be the devil's advocate and question the solution that is being brought forward to deal with this problem. For some folks like me, I don't usually look through the Groups section since most of the time, I'm just browsing through the People List or the Photos List.
It would help the models more if they can see in the photographer's profile, there is some kind of a "recommendation" feature where other models have vouched for this photographer as a reliable, trustworthy, and respectful individual. So it's more of a direct, in-your-face kind of information, rather than having to look for it in a Group somewhere. And this can go for everyone, not just for photographers. Models will get recommendations if they are awesome to work with, vs the ones that are no-shows, or cancelling a few hours before shoot, etc..
Actually MR has planned an internal meeting set for this weekend to discuss possible system-level functionality that will improve the use and implementation behind the basic concept of the 'Safe List'. Your idea is a good one and something we'll definitely consider. Thanks for your suggestion.
I agree. I think that this is a good idea, however I haven't actually worked with anyone from this site so my question is, am I "unrecommended" or whatever the term may be because of this?
And would it take only one recommendation to become "recommended"? Or would there be some sort of a rating system? Any unexperienced model could think that a good photographer is bad, or a bad photographer is good.
I like phocalpoint's icon idea "It would help the models more if they can see in the photographer's profile, there is some kind of a "recommendation" feature where other models have vouched for this photographer as a reliable, trustworthy, and respectful individual".
This is such a good idea! It'll definitely make it easier for models to know who is a good choice or not because I know it's definitely sometimes hard to know who's a safe bet and who's not. I was just wondering how will models like myself be able to view this list as it says I can't view the group.
Thanks! I know me and many other models really appreciate what you're doing to help us all! Rachel :)
Oh no that's not what I meant, it's definitely not too much work! It's such a good idea! I just meant that at the moment for models who are not yet part of the group we're unable to view the list of the safe photographers.
I definitely always do my research too tho. Better safe than sorry :)
sorry rachel i want referring to your post... i was referring to the point made earlier about about having some sort of icon in the photographers' profiles.
having a badge seems a little subjective to me... i would still prefer direct contact with models/references. A fine example is this... awhile back i asked for a reference from a model regarding a photographer she gave me her honest opinion (which was pretty positive) I did the shoot and well it was awfull... her experience was completely different from mine... that being sad ik now make sure to ask a variety of people when i do new shoots. The point is the badge takes away from getting all the details you need. I think this community should encourage communication rather than hide behind titles and logos
the point i suggested earlier can actually be abused, i just realized. i fully agree with beatrix's point. it would be nice to have a reference list bound to a profile (or automatically built when they tag a person in the photos) so that whoever would like to work with that person, can do their research by messaging those in the reference list.

Here's my issue - There is/are (a) member/s of this group that I have personally seen display less than professional behavior. To be honest, as part of my professional practice I choose not to be associated with this/these person/people and thus completely disqualifies the legitimacy of the group in my mind.
Adam- are you refering to behavior in a non-profesional setting? If so I don't think that counts. I was under the impression that the safe list is more along to idea of references.
