As opposed to adding suggestions to the Bugs post, let's add them here.
I'll start.
Groups Page: There is a 'New Post' link which is great for starting group related posts, however I think we can encourage people to add photos to groups if we include a 'Add Photos' link (right-aligned) of the Our Collective Work header. This link would take users to their Manage Portfolio page with the group tab open. That way they could then just drag and drop the images.
The People section should be sortable by location too... I would like to know who are the photographers/MUA/models local to me. (Or did I miss that somewhere?)
"my quick links" and "log out" should be separated from the main navigation, and considered utility. I'm hunting for them in the main navigation as a learned behavior. Not intuitive.
To iWoo: Nope, you didn't miss it :-) Sorting, filtering and search will be delivered shortly. Currently there are a couple of other things in the cue (watchist and dashboard) before we get to that, however it will not be long. Once completed, users will have lots of ways to slice and dice content and filter out things they do not want to see. Of course some of this depends on users entering in data (such as location) for this to work 100%.
To mwarf: You're correct. We considered a 'utility nav' which would have been placed right at the top of the screen, however during the design phase it was decided it might be lost at the top. Go figure! In an attempt to satisfy both concerns, we differentiated the Quick Links and Logout buttons with a darker color. Not a perfect solution, but with some time I think we'll get it right.
A feature suggestion is a shoot calendar. You could display the calendar on each person's profile so you can check out their availability. It would be nice if you could suggest a shoot for them and if they accept it shows up in both of your calendars. Then if you invite a make-up artist and they accept then it shows up in all three calendars. There should also be the ability to message everyone involved with the shoot.
Thanks for your suggestion... It's definitely a useful feature and a natural progression for the 'User Status' option. If I remember correctly, I think Derrick suggested this once before as well. We've considered the feature internally and hope to implement it somewhere down the road once we reach a certain level of user participation - phase 2.
As a photographer I would REALLY like to have the system put my copyright text on every image I upload so I don't have to go into each image to add it.
As a photographer I would REALLY like to have the system put my copyright text on every image I upload so I don't have to go into each image to add it.
Hi Aduro,
Thanks for validating that its needed, that feature is coming!
You guys are probably on this already, but in case you aren't, I was thinking that a "credit" link to the model, photographer, mua, stylist, director or other contributing professionals, much like MM would be handy. Often I'll notice a particularly good shot either on a model's page or in the photogrpher's port and wonder who the people were who created this bit of genius.
Would you have to assign a member # in order to do this?
GSImagery - That's great that you want to add credits! The good news is that you can already do this! Simply navigate to your Manage Portfolio page and click the 'Edit Photo' icon beneath your photo. On the Edit page, you'll see a 'Credits' field. Type in the user name of the individual you'd like to credit. Our system is smart enough to auto complete when it detects a user with matching characters. If you do not know the user's name, navigate to their page and you will see it listed bold at the top as well as in the URL.
The general layout and feel of the web pages is quite fine. However, I personally find your choice of dark colours for the text is "too dark". My monitor is fully calibrated. On the whole, I think text material would be easier to read if you you bumped up the text intensity by one level. What is now "dark" text should be the present "medium" intensity (and up the scale incrementally).
The image statistics are a rather interesting feature in that it displays the number of views of the picture. It would be nice if the view count would NOT be updated when the image owner views the image. For example, when editing the text information associated with the image, the view count should not go up.
1. If I disable 18+ images, I still see MY 18+ images on the mr HOME page and on my home page. This option should be always honoured as set (IMHO) even if they are my images.
2. A persistent option should be easily set (possibly on the MR "about / sign up" bar at the bottom of each page to enable / disable 18+. This will allow viewing MR pages from public areas.
This should be dependent on the "my preferences" setting: if "my preferences" disable 18+, then 18+ images should never show. If "my preferences" enable 18+, then the display of 18+ images should be done as selected on the suggested option on the MR bottom-of-page menu bar. Effectively, the user should have to basic 18+ option. The basic one is the present 18+ setting and the other is the "temporary 18+" setting on the bottom menu bar.
If I "edit" my image and add a "credit" to a model, the credit is not remembered. If I add a "copyright", the copyright is remembered. Seems as though the "credit" field is not updated during an edit. This is forgotten unless you SELECT the blue highlighted name from the credit list. If you simply leave the name in the credit without selecting, it is forgotten.
The "castings" on the menu bar takes you into the castings section to allow a browse / add of castings.
It would be nice if you click on the "Castings" title of the casting history on the right side of the MR HOME page, it would also take you to the casting section. This just "makes sense" IMHO :-)
and.... for symmetry, if you click on the MR HOME page "Latest Topics", it should take you into the forum section...... and "new photos" and "new members"
In effect, ALL titles on the header/menu bar of "sub sections" should work like "more"...

A "date needed" field might be useful on the "castings" section that would display at the top of the castiing call. This makes it more convenient for people to get a sense of the timing needed when browsing the calls. Of course, this can be specifically stated in the text information.
The ability to choose this sort (or maybe the default) should be "date needed".
I have a flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62871957@N00/
If I try to add this to the "flickr" link field in my profile, I get error message "cannot find, do you have HTTP?" Obviously, I must be doing something wrong - but cannot figure out what.
Is it reasonable to display JPG images (maybe a limit of one) on the profile page. Examine my profile page for my intentions. I prefer to identify my self with an image - but don't want this image to be my avitar.
If a person is replying to a casting call, an option button should be provided to allow them to send the reply by private message rather than publicly visible comments. The message title should be "Re: the original title" Some respondents may wish this for some "privacy" reasons.
One of the "problems" with messages is to know when they have been read by the recipient. This is somewhat important in the following sense:
Models and photographers (somewhat) often do not bother to reply to messages - possibly because the consider themselves to be demi-gods and cannot take the time or courtesy to reply to a message.
For example, I might ask a "super-model" to do a TFP shoot with fashion/jewelery theme. They might read the message but, after looking at my port, choose not to work with me - in fact, they simply ignore the request. If I knew that the model had read the message but I received no reply for (lets say) 2 weeks, I then know she is not interested in working. On the other hand, if I knew the message was not yet viewed, I would have some indication that she may, at some later time, get onto MR and reply to my request.
The same applies when models (possibly newbies) request a shoot from photographers - some of the big guns are so big that they will not bother to reply to such a lowly creature.
Some indication of "message read" would be very informative.
Model stats are necessary when shooting to requirements. For example, a fashion shoot generally is easier with a tall model. Hair colour can be important. Weight is a general indication of how tall "does the model appear". Ethnicity/skin colour is useful when trying for a specific "look".
IMHO, the necessary model stats are: height, hair colour, hair length, weight, ethnicity, skin colour, age.
Age is also useful for a "look" requirement - although that can roughly be guessed at from the port. However AGE is very important when considering 18+ shoots.
Useful information: will the model work TF* or Paid Only? A few girls I work with are now ONLY paid assignments - although previously were TF*. This would compliment the Casting Call compensation field.
When viewing a portfolio, the "next" and "previous" buttons do not work as anticipated. If you position your self to the first image in the upper left corner of the port and click the "next" button, the anticipation is that the next image to the left is chosen - and this is indicated by the arrow directions. Another way of viewing it - the button on the "left" side of the image should choose the next image "to the left" in the port, and conversely, the "right" side button should choose the image "to the right".
Seems to me that the words "next" and "previous" buttons should be swapped in position and then the direction of movement would as anticipated.
Image comments are in time sequence - at the top of the list is the oldest, then to the newest at the bottom of the list. IMHO, it would be better if the comments were displayed in reverse time sequence - newest to oldest. This would allow easier review of new comments - rather than scrolling down through a potentially long list.
It might be useful adding a "sort by" option to the "Member Profile" page when viewing a persons profile / image thumbs. This might be similar to the sorting option for the "Portfolio" option when viewing "my" portfolio. Seems to me the useful options would be "alphabetically", "most views", "most comments", "date added", "people in the credits", maybe an option to "sort by MUA, Model, Photographer". Who knows, maybe a couple of other sorts.
The alpha sort seems useful since some of the folks are giving the name of the model or name of the photographer as part of the image title. Sort by credit types would also allow you to see who this person has worked with and maybe you would like to visit their portfolio.
I have to agree with Tony on a number of his points.
The "next" "previous" navigation issues are valid, a minor nuisance but valid nonetheless. The current set-up is counter intuitive.
The present portfolio sequencing of images is very limited. Chronological and alphabetical ordering options are really not that useful iin my way of thinking. When a printed portfolio is presented to an art director, for example, there is a particular order in which the photographer or model presents his or her work in the book. It is not done alphabetically. It is done with a clear vision to a prefered sequence in which the artist wishes to display his or her body of work. Can a drag and drop system not be made available?
As Tony stated, Model Stats are vital when considering certain shoots. Can we please make this a requirement of all who are actively seeking to shoot with credible photographers? One should not have to make contact and engage in communication in order to establish up to date basic information when considering a model for a particular genre of work.

- Would be nice to have a way to see all my faves as I click next. Maybe a option that you can one by one when you click next, instead of having to use the browser to go back. I could be a option called my favorite collection or so.
When images are uploaded, the default "tag" or image title defaults to the uploaded file name. Some folks have left this tag unedited and looks rather odd such as "edit2-3930-aug.jpg". Maybe a more reasonable default would be the name of the member+current date (or some such other) which would at least look better if the member does not edit the image tag.
Note: Group Avatars are getting squished vertically. Have to look into that.

We should be able to tag the model / mua / photographer / wardrobe stylist etc in each photo. It would be sweet if there was a feature like in facebook where we can tag ourselves and our friends in other pictures, and then people could look at our work in other people's albums all in one place.
If an image in a portfolio is viewed, a list of CREDITS is displayed at the bottom of the image. However, you do not know WHY the credit is there. For example, if three credits are give for, say, MUA, MODEL, and WARDROBE, it would be nice if these key-words would appear such as:
CREDITS: MUA: Alluringcolour MODEL: Carina WARDROBE: Wilson
If you send a message to another MR member and accidentally DOUBLE CLICK on the "SUBMIT" button, the message is posted twice. Maybe a good idea is to not accept a message from a person less than 2 seconds apart???
Can YOU or one of the admins PLEASE send out an all points email to ask people to FILL IN THEIR INFO on their profile pages please!!! I'm getting a little annoyed at having to ask people where they are located when trying to set up a shoot!
It would be nice if the STATS view would give the number of individual picture views. It is nice to see that 25 folks looked at my portfolio, but how many pictures did they actuall look at?
If you change the size of the text display on the browser (in my case Firefox on WinXP), the pull-down menus do not honour the current text size. This is evident on "My Quick Links" - if larger letters are chosen, the display of the pull-down is frozen and you cannot see some of the options. It would be nice if the pulldown could at least expand in length.
top three things i'd love to see (though tony has brought up oodles of good points)..
1. a default copyright notice that could be overwritten if desired 1b. failing that, include the form element in the return page from uploading. while it's still simpler to upload here than mm, its still too many steps to complete.
2. left is previous, right is next.. click the left of a picture, go back, the right go forward. so simple, so important to make you want to flip through pictures.
3. organize photos on my home page. it's nice the most current photos are there, but they may not be the shots i want people to see first. is this flickr, or a model site :)
Messages between members should be editable and/or should allow deletion. After reviewing and posting a message, you might want to re-phrase a sentence or change a spelling / grammar mistake.
Ruzz stole mine with his point #2. Photo navigation should be made more natural.
The only other thing I would suggest is to have some sort of jQuery slideshow, or lightbox for display of the photos in a portfolio instead of reloading the page each time, and an associated 'Slideshow' link to start that ball rolling.
In fact we're working on that very thing! Just a bit of patience is all I ask but the MR coding monkeys team is going to be releasing some feature enhancements very soon (including the slideshow idea).
-Ryan
PS: But jQuery? Come on! Haven't you noticed we're a Mootools bunch? ;)
Most Viewed... does this reset monthly to account for new member photos? I ask this because it's always good to get photographers producing competitve content.
Mootools, hey? Well, I didn't notice, but thanks for the hints. I've noticed the new photo navigation links appearing. I like em, thanks. Can't wait for more.
It would be really nice if you could organize the order that your photos are displayed in your portfolio.
Didn't realize I couldn't do this or I would have uploaded all my photos in the opposite order. I loaded the best ones first and they are now at the back of my portfolio.
Hope this option becomes available.
Otherwise love the site and the fact that you aren't limited to 20 images.
For some reason or another, I still find the concept of "previous" and "next" images in the portfolio to be awkward The natural previous and next are opposite to the implementation. The thumbnail images in the portfolio are really encapsulated "words" of the "text" that are represented by the pictures. The Western languages naturally read left-to-right. The viewing of the images should reflect this common order in the same way that viewing of the thumbnails are perceived as "Next" meaning "to the right" - just think of reading English text - the next word is the word on the right.
When one reads this sentence the 'previous' words precede the current PHOTO in the sentence. Naturally the 'next' words fall subsequently to the right as the eye tracks from left to right.
Therefore if you want to move backwards through the collection go left. If you want to move forward through the collection, move right.
For the thumbnail image groupings the 'previous' and 'next' are on the proper sides of the page, however the 'next' link takes you to older photos. This is opposite of the 'Zoom View' implementation. So we'll take a look at working out the inconsistency.
I'm not sure if that's what you are pointing out?

The thumbnail ordering is appropriate IMHO with previous and next. This is a logically contrary to the image traversal with previous and next - and image traversal should reflect the same order as thumbnail traversal.
"next" and "previous" (in the forward/backward sense) should not be in terms of history of posting (i.e.oldest/newest) but in terms of visual layout of the order presented visually.
If you do implement the ability to order your images for display, the oldest/newest concept is obviously thrown out of the door. IMHO, nobody reads "oldest word to newest word" since this has no valid meaning in any document since you do not know what order the words were put together. All documents (in western languages) read left to right. The "previous" is to the left and the "next" is to the right.
Thanks for your unique perspective Tony. It's insightful as always. We're always working towards a higher level of functionality for our users and will take whatever steps we feel are necessary to achieve that goal.
The image information associated with a given picture is a bit misleading. The "Image Information" seems to be extracted from the image EXIF. For example, make of camera, ISO etc. However, the "Picture Date" is not the date taken - it is the upload date and time. Since it is with the EXIF extracted, this implies the date uploaded is the date the image was taken.
Seems to me that, if things are to seem consistent, "Picture date" should be titles "Picture added date" and, if a "Date Shot" is extracted, it should be so indicated.
I assume that, if a person wishes to view a portfolio, they just click on the first image of the port and wish to view successive images. The obvious way to do this, aside from clicking on "previous" and "next" is to click on the image itself. If you do this on the first image of the port, of course, it does not advance to the "previous" image as expected. I very much doubt that people will figure out that they should go to the last thumbnail of the port to view the entire port as successive images by clicking on the image.
I would suggest switching the function of the 'Previous' and 'Next' buttons beneath the photos. It is frustrating having to click the 'previous' button to go to the 'next' photo in the gallery.
Some way of doing 'negative' searches. I can find Edmonton models, but that won't show any from the nearby areas (ie St Albert). But if I could enter -Edmonton -Calgary -Red Deer I could get a smaller list of models to have to go through.
Or have the city show up on their photo along with name/friends/watches.
Is there a way to instantly submit an image to a group? Or maybe I'm not doing it right, but I go to the image, and then "invite to group" and then I have to go back into my dashboard to see image invitations, and then select again and hit accept in order to send them into group. Little tedious.
Calvin - the easiest way to add images to your groups is to go to your My Portfolio page. On the right you will see tabs for Photos, Albums, Collections and Groups. By default Photos is selected. Click on the Groups tab and you will see the groups you have joined. Now just drag and drop photos from your library onto any group and they will be added.
Maybe this has been requested before, but it would be nice to have a group messaging thing. Instead of sending a message to just one person, it would be nice to send it to multiple people for collaboration purposes....
It would be nice to clarify the "Designer" categories a bit here. Graphic designer? Clothing designer? Maybe they should be seperate categories? I dunno... Just thinkin out loud :)

Hey Beatrix - There are no formal 'rules'. I was hoping the community would police itself, but maybe some rules are in order. We really want this site to be a reflection of what the membership makes it. That said, if you have any ideas for rules, please let me know. Let's get some consensus and see if we can build a set of principles/rules that people can get behind and support.
Well my biggest issue I think is obvious. The Spamming. It's getting to the point where certain individuals use the message boards merely as a place to spam/ advertise... essentially asking for money. One of these posters is spamming for a third party, and well maybe it's just me but that shits not cool. Kijiji and craiglist type sites exist for a reason
The main page "casting" list on the right side does not indicate what the casting is for - it simply displays the title of the casting call. It might be nice if the line after the casting title display the type of casting... e.g...
@Myshkin - You're not blind :D - It is a coming feature, but not one implemented yet. We're working on it, promise!
@BeatrixMae - Believe it or not, having those privacy controls was a feature we were serious on. In talking with fotographix, he informed me it was quite common for some models to desire control over who could see their photos.

tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 10 months agoModel stats are necessary when shooting to requirements.

1 year, 10 months agoWhen viewing a portfolio, the "next" and "previous" buttons do not work as anticipated.

1 year, 10 months agoIt would be nice if you could easily reorder the viewing sequence of the portfolio - similar to the drag and drop image movement on MM.
tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 10 months agoImage comments are in time sequence - at the top of the list is the oldest, then to the newest at the bottom of the list. IMHO, it would be better if the comments were displayed in reverse time sequence - newest to oldest. This would allow easier review of new comments - rather than scrolling down through a potentially long list.

1 year, 10 months agoIt might be useful adding a "sort by" option to the "Member Profile" page when viewing a persons profile / image thumbs.

1 year, 10 months agoI have to agree with Tony on a number of his points.

1 year, 9 months agoHi Ryan, these is for you!
- Would be nice to have a way to see all my faves as I click next. Maybe a option that you can one by one when you click next, instead of having to use the browser to go back. I could be a option called my favorite collection or so.
Same could be applied for Photos and People.
Sorry about any English mistake.

1 year, 9 months agoWhen images are uploaded, the default "tag" or image title defaults to the uploaded file name. Some folks have left this tag unedited and looks rather odd such as "edit2-3930-aug.jpg". Maybe a more reasonable default would be the name of the member+current date (or some such other) which would at least look better if the member does not edit the image tag.

1 year, 9 months agoWe should be able to tag the model / mua / photographer / wardrobe stylist etc in each photo. It would be sweet if there was a feature like in facebook where we can tag ourselves and our friends in other pictures, and then people could look at our work in other people's albums all in one place.
tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 9 months agoIf an image in a portfolio is viewed, a list of CREDITS is displayed at the bottom of the image. However, you do not know WHY the credit is there. For example, if three credits are give for, say, MUA, MODEL, and WARDROBE, it would be nice if these key-words would appear such as:
CREDITS: MUA: Alluringcolour MODEL: Carina WARDROBE: Wilson

1 year, 8 months agoIf you change the size of the text display on the browser (in my case Firefox on WinXP), the pull-down menus do not honour the current text size. This is evident on "My Quick Links" - if larger letters are chosen, the display of the pull-down is frozen and you cannot see some of the options. It would be nice if the pulldown could at least expand in length.

1 year, 7 months agotop three things i'd love to see (though tony has brought up oodles of good points)..
1. a default copyright notice that could be overwritten if desired 1b. failing that, include the form element in the return page from uploading. while it's still simpler to upload here than mm, its still too many steps to complete.
2. left is previous, right is next.. click the left of a picture, go back, the right go forward. so simple, so important to make you want to flip through pictures.
3. organize photos on my home page. it's nice the most current photos are there, but they may not be the shots i want people to see first. is this flickr, or a model site :)

1 year, 7 months agoRuzz stole mine with his point #2. Photo navigation should be made more natural.
The only other thing I would suggest is to have some sort of jQuery slideshow, or lightbox for display of the photos in a portfolio instead of reloading the page each time, and an associated 'Slideshow' link to start that ball rolling.
Ryan (Photographer)
1 year, 7 months agothorinside,
In fact we're working on that very thing! Just a bit of patience is all I ask but the MR coding monkeys team is going to be releasing some feature enhancements very soon (including the slideshow idea).

1 year, 6 months agoIt would be really nice if you could organize the order that your photos are displayed in your portfolio.
Didn't realize I couldn't do this or I would have uploaded all my photos in the opposite order. I loaded the best ones first and they are now at the back of my portfolio.
Hope this option becomes available.
Otherwise love the site and the fact that you aren't limited to 20 images.
tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 6 months agoFor some reason or another, I still find the concept of "previous" and "next" images in the portfolio to be awkward The natural previous and next are opposite to the implementation. The thumbnail images in the portfolio are really encapsulated "words" of the "text" that are represented by the pictures. The Western languages naturally read left-to-right. The viewing of the images should reflect this common order in the same way that viewing of the thumbnails are perceived as "Next" meaning "to the right" - just think of reading English text - the next word is the word on the right.
fotographix.ca (Photographer)
1 year, 6 months agoHi Tony,
Take the following into consideration:
... previous, previous, previous, previous, PHOTO, next, next, next, next ...

1 year, 6 months agoThe thumbnail ordering is appropriate IMHO with previous and next.
The "previous" is to the left and the "next" is to the right.
fotographix.ca (Photographer)
1 year, 6 months agoThanks for your unique perspective Tony. It's insightful as always. We're always working towards a higher level of functionality for our users and will take whatever steps we feel are necessary to achieve that goal.
tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 6 months agoThe image information associated with a given picture is a bit misleading. The "Image Information" seems to be extracted from the image EXIF. For example, make of camera, ISO etc. However, the "Picture Date" is not the date taken - it is the upload date and time. Since it is with the EXIF extracted, this implies the date uploaded is the date the image was taken.
Seems to me that, if things are to seem consistent, "Picture date" should be titles "Picture added date" and, if a "Date Shot" is extracted, it should be so indicated.
tonyfield (Photographer)
1 year, 6 months agoI assume that, if a person wishes to view a portfolio, they just click on the first image of the port and wish to view successive images.

12 months, 1 day agoSome way of doing 'negative' searches. I can find Edmonton models, but that won't show any from the nearby areas (ie St Albert). But if I could enter -Edmonton -Calgary -Red Deer I could get a smaller list of models to have to go through.
Or have the city show up on their photo along with name/friends/watches.

11 months, 4 days agoIs there a way to instantly submit an image to a group? Or maybe I'm not doing it right, but I go to the image, and then "invite to group" and then I have to go back into my dashboard to see image invitations, and then select again and hit accept in order to send them into group. Little tedious.
fotographix.ca (Photographer)
11 months, 3 days agoCalvin - the easiest way to add images to your groups is to go to your My Portfolio page. On the right you will see tabs for Photos, Albums, Collections and Groups. By default Photos is selected. Click on the Groups tab and you will see the groups you have joined. Now just drag and drop photos from your library onto any group and they will be added.
Hope that helps!

10 months, 1 week agoHey Beatrix - There are no formal 'rules'. I was hoping the community would police itself, but maybe some rules are in order. We really want this site to be a reflection of what the membership makes it. That said, if you have any ideas for rules, please let me know. Let's get some consensus and see if we can build a set of principles/rules that people can get behind and support.

It's getting to the point where certain individuals use the message boards merely as a place to spam/ advertise... essentially asking for money. One of these posters is spamming for a third party, and well maybe it's just me but that shits not cool. Kijiji and craiglist type sites exist for a reason
